Granite surfaces are resistant to both heat and scratches. However, granite is susceptible to food and liquid stains. To minimize staining, granite countertops must be sealed every 6 months to a year with a penetrating sealer that soaks into the stone and provides invisible protection.

Routine cleaning can be accomplished with stone care cleaning products manufactured specifically for granite or mild household detergent. Avoid vinegars or other acid-based cleaners.

To minimize the potential for stains, wipe up spills immediately. Water left on a granite countertop will leave a dark spot that gradually disappears as the water evaporates. Oil left on granite will be absorbed into the stone. Oil-based stains, such as grease, cooking oil or milk can be flushed out with a soft, liquid cleanser with bleach, a household detergent or ammonia. Organic stains such as coffee, tea and fruit can be treated with a 12% hydrogen peroxide solution treated with a few drops of ammonia.

Although its hardness makes scratches rare, scratches in granite must be repaired professionally. The professional would sand the scratch out with a diamond abrasive, then repolish the surface.
